Are spring cleanses really necessary?
Updated: May 9, 2019
The birds are singing, the grass is getting green and the air is starting to warm. This is the time of year when your body starts to warm up after the long winter raising our energy levels and inspiring us to start something new. It is also the time of year that the health conscious think of doing a cleanse. They believe that they need to rid the body of toxins accumulated during the long winter.
In their quest for health they drink nothing but juice or tea, limit calories and spend a lot of time in the bathroom. Instead of supporting their liver and kidneys, they tax them terribly and cause more problems than they solve.
The truth is, your body detoxes on its own every day. Your liver and kidney's main function is to do just that, flush toxins from your body. They do it on their own without any help from us. That said, when we eat a lot of processed foods, drink lots of alcohol or take a lot of pharmaceuticals, our liver and kidneys can be taxed and not work as well.

Support your organs instead of cleansing
If you want to help your liver and kidneys, the best way forward is to support them and tone them, not tax them by asking them to work 5 times harder. How do you do that?
“the best way forward to support them and tone them not tax them”
Very simply. Focus on a diet of raw, high fiber organic foods. Drink at least 2 liters of water a day. Avoid processed foods, caffeine and alcohol. Fill half of your plate with fruits and vegetables, one quarter with protein and one quarter with complex carbs. Add a tea of pot herbs and liver tonics such as nettles, alfalfa, dandelion root, burdock and/or red clover twice a day and you are good to go. The best part is you only need to follow this regime for three weeks.
Although you can put this program together by yourself, a qualified herbalist can create a tea blend and make diet recommendations that address your unique health concerns. Regardless of which path your choose, you can feel confident that gently supporting your organs will improve your health more effectively than starving yourself and drinking juice for days on end.
